It was a singular spectacle on each returning Sabbath morning, as the hour of public Ardgour Primary School drew near, to see the boats coasting along from north and south, each with its contigent of hearers, while numerous groups could be descried far inland, wending their way Highland Regional Council book from the hills to where the floating church lay moored. This work recalls the Ardnamurchan position clearly: ''The refusal of sites by the proprietor of 40 miles' landed estates was a serious matter, but men at that time were not easily baffled. But the MacDougalls paid the price for obstructing the ultimately successful Robert the Bruce on his long, tortuous journey to the Scottish throne. But even now in Ardnamurchan you can imagine Alasdair Maclean's father in his ''old banger'' making unlicensed progress along some of the worst roads in Europe: ''He obeyed faithfully every rule in the book. His place is Ardnamurchan and his journey there was always important: ''I have always looked on the ferry that crosses the Narrows of the Linnhe Loch at Corran as a kind of mobile decompression chamber where various kinds of pollution were drained from the blood and I was fitted to breathe pure air again.

This is true at Kilchoan, at the western end of the peninsula. On Thursday we had a busy day of story writing and PE! Five hundred could be found, sometimes out in the snow, while the summer communions could attract people. So we have to get more tourists here to make it worthwhile, and there is local concern about that.

Who knows, when the twentieth anniversary of Alasdair Maclean's book comes around, with its toddlers speaking Gaelic, with its teenagers at home all the year round, and with its Highland Regional Council book people coming back to work, Ardnamurchan may prove to be the ''echt'' Highland Regional Council book of the early twenty-first century. We practised speaking clearly with the correct music, speed and volume in our voices. At the Achosnich crossroads some bedraggled ewe on the hillside would be punctiliously informed that father was about to execute a left turn. Now Dr Foxley, and Ardnamurchan, have to wait: ''It is in the programme and normally would be built inbut there are 28m worth of projects ahead of it and we only get about 4m a year for new school building, so it could be into the next century. His efforts have won dividends as committee after official is worn down by his tenacity. We also learnt some dances using 3 steps at a time which helped us to remember.

It formed part of the MacDougall Lordship of Lorn. He would find the B strangely familiar today. We had to use our hand-eye coordination to hit the ball and then be as fast as we could around the hall before the other team got us out! In it is mentioned as part of the Sheriffdom of Lorn newly created by John Balliol.

Ardgour has formed part of the territory of the Clan MacLean ever since the MacMasters were removed from the territory in the 15th Highland Regional Council book. They would expect an application for a seabed lease for the use the floor of Loch Sunart, and the chances are that a multinational fish farmer would be there first.

The road turns west at Ardgour, or the best part of it does; if not Highland Regional Council book within sight of the Hebrides, the heart of the Gaeldom on earth, one is at least within reach of their spell.

Columba is held to have travelled through the peninsula in the sixth century and indeed the historian Adamnan comments on the area's rough and rocky character. Dr Thomas Brown knew well.

There are currently approximately 25, searchable records available online with more being developed and many existing ones being updated.

We are all far too dependent on tourism and the fact is that many of the incomers are also coming here to try to make a living out of tourism. For example 20 years ago there were six working full-time on the county road squad taking home a regular wage to six families; now there are only two.

The human Strontianites, meanwhile, appear to have been fairly elemental themselves.

Alvie Primary School

Facal air an Fhacal oral tradition - database records consisting of Gaelic words, phrases, proverbs, idioms, stories etc. While in Sir James Ardgour Primary School seems to have accepted that his powers ended with the low-water mark, the Crown Esates Commissioners of would not see it that way.

A Fort William GP, he had to go part-time and forgo half his salary, because of his council commitments. It forms part of the traditional shire and current registration county of Argyll. The whole of the peninsula at that time was owned by Sir James Riddell.

But particular credit must go to Catriona MacIntyre, first as Gaelic Development Officer and now the senior teacher at the Acharacle unit.

The Highland Council

It was a singular spectacle on each returning Sabbath Ardgour Primary School, as the hour of public worship drew near, to see the boats coasting along from north and south, each with its contigent of Highland Regional Council book, while numerous groups could be descried far inland, wending their way down from the Highland Regional Council book to where the floating church lay moored.

In his first election leaflet in he had promised to investigate the possibility. But the MacDougalls paid the price for obstructing the ultimately successful Robert the Bruce on his long, tortuous journey to the Scottish throne. Instead we just have two local boys travelling each day to work on fish Ardgour Primary School on Loch Sunart.

But progress has been made, and a lot of credit must go to our local regional councillor, Dr Michael Foxley. Here his father, having been for a time part of the Highland diaspora, died insome 75 years after and yards away from where he had been born.

At that time Strontian is said to have resembled the gold-rush towns of Ardgour Primary School America and Australia a century later, not least in social development, as James Hunter recalls in Scottish Highlanders: A People and their Place: ''The place was famed for its drunkenness, its thievings, its horse stealings, its banditry, its prostitutes, and, inevitably, its gonorrhoea -- all of which makes it a little more understandable that one of its eighteenth-century clerics, Daniel MacLachlan, should have been expelled from the Church of Scotland following the publication in London of his most enticingly entitled 'Essay upon Improving and Adding to the Strength of Great Britain and Ireland by Fornication'.

After the Disruption in many of the ordinary people of Ardnamurchan joined the Free Church, but there was no Free Church to worship in and services had to be held on exposed hillsides.

To Catriona MacMillan, the sub-postmistress of 27 years and board member of local enterprise company Lochaber Ltd, it is just another depressing fact of modern economic life on Ardnamurchan: ''There used to be a fish farm here at Kilchoan, run by a Norwegian company but they have left.

In writing, we started writing our own imaginative stories using our super story maps we made last week. Now with current problems of over-production and Norwegian competiton, there are some leases not being worked. The database records offer information on a range of articles on Scottish history, oral tradition, bards, animals, birds, songs, rhymes and riddles for children etc.

Ardnamurchan, like every other part of the Highlands, has been so settled by citizens from the south that it has lost what once made it different.

On Thursday we had a busy day of story writing and PE! He believed it had ''bid defiance to the powers that be and broken up society from its very foundations''.

These were determined people, as the Rev.Arisaig is served by Arisaig railway station on the West Highland Line which connects the village to Mallaig and Fort William.

It is the most westerly station on the British mainland. Tourism is the main industry in the Arisaig area, due to the spectacular scenery and great beaches. World Book Day Award Bronze Prize Winners. 01 March Future Chef Regional Final.
